The way back 2020

plot

Jack Cunningham is an alcoholic construction worker, separated from his wife Angela. During a Thanksgiving dinner with his mother, sister Beth and family, Beth revealed that friends, including Angela, were concerned about his drinking and isolation from friends and family. The next day, Jack received a call from Father Divin at Catholic high school Bishop Hayes, where he was a basketball star and led the team to multiple championships. Father Devine asked him to become a school basketball coach because the current coach had a heart attack. Jack was reluctant at first, but accepted the job. Jack was introduced to assistant coach and algebra teacher Dan and team members. Bishop Hayes won only one game and hasn't played in the playoffs since Jack was a student. As a result, the interest of students in basketball has dropped greatly. This team has only six school team players. These players include the team's introverted point guard and the most talented player, Brandon, and team center Marcus, whose attitude has compounded his teammates and Jack. In the first game coached by Jack, the team will face Memorial, a larger school with more talented teams. Jack was significantly behind on Marcus' bench and frustrated by the lack of effort, he demanded the team show greater resilience. Even so, Bishop Hayes lost miserably. Dan began to notice signs of Jack's alcoholism, including monuments commemorating his drinking habits and the finding of beer cans in Jack's office.

After the game, Jack drove him home in Brandon alone. Brandon revealed that his mother had died and his father cared for his brother, preventing him from participating in the game. Angela meets with Jack and reveals that she is meeting new people. Jack began to make strategic adjustments to the team, adopted a full-field news defense, and concentrated on making adjustments to make up for the team's relative lack of size and talent. Initially, the team was annoyed by the stricter approach and Jack's aggressive attitude, but soon began to respect him. When Marcus was late for the next game, Jack kicked him out of the team. The change in Jack led to a close-range match, where he devised a game that allowed Brandon to pass to his teammates to win the game. Jack encouraged him to make himself the best player on the team and develop his leadership skills. He urged Brandon to speak out more on the pitch and eventually named him captain. Marcus came to Jack's home without an announcement and asked to be allowed to return to the team. Jack finally relieved. The team continued to succeed and Jack made contact with his players. He drank less alcohol and began to spend more time with family and friends. Jack and Angela attend the birthday party of Jack and Angela's son Miguel, David. According to reports, Jack and Angela have a son, Michael, who died of cancer. David and Michael are in the hospital together. David is now released. On the drive home, Jack revealed to Brandon that his father was a forgotten person, and he only noticed him when he discovered that Jack's basketball talents. As a result, Jack rejected the full athletic scholarship offered to the University of Kansas, and has never been exposed to basketball since.

As Bishop Hayes only needed one victory to make it to the playoffs, they gave up the fourth quarter to go to the disadvantaged team. Jack was expelled when he protested on the phone. Bishop Hayes lost the game. Their last game of the season is a rematch with Memorial. Jack visited Brandon's father, Russ, at work, telling him that Brandon had already received the attention of college recruiters. Russ himself was a college basketball player, and he discouraged his son from using basketball as a ticket to improve his life. During the game, Memorial jumped out of the lead, but Bishop Hayes gradually made a comeback. In the final game, Jack drafted a play for Brandon, shooting in the open, but reconsidered, let Brandon shoot in person. Brandon takes a shot and Bishop Hayes wins the game. Later, Jack received a call from Angela telling him that David was in the hospital. During the visit, Jack and Angela overheard a doctor and informed David's parents that his cancer had returned. Their sad sight disturbed Jack, who left the hospital and returned to his regular bar, where he started drinking again.

The next morning, Jack was late, but still drunk, wrongly blamed the power failure on his absence. Dan told Father Devine, who fired Jack, told him he couldn't trust his entire team, and worried that he had serious problems. Jack resumed heavy drinking. One night, while drunk with the woman he met at the bar, Jack rear-ended a small boat tethered to a parked car. The woman ran away and told him to enter her house from behind. Jack accidentally entered the wrong house, where he met the residents of the house. Jack tried to leave before the police arrived, but confrontation has become a reality. He was pushed down the front steps of the house and unconscious in the street. He woke up at the hospital where Beth met him, and Beth asked him to get help for alcohol. Jack started receiving treatment and started talking publicly about his son's death. The Hayes Bishops dedicated their first playoff game to Jack. Brandon thinks his father and brother are participating. At the same time, Jack picked up the basketball on the outdoor court and started shooting.
